EmPoWER Somerset provides a wide range of educational programs for adults. Our programs are facilitated by skilled prevention educators using evidence-based curriculums with documented success in enhancing positive life skills and healthy choices.

Achieving Personal Balance

Achieving Personal Balance (APB) teaches Veterans behavioral, social, and cognitive coping strategies to address stressful situations at home, work, and interpersonal relationships through a combination of brief presentations, small and large group discussions, and experiential exercises. APB covers topics such as, healthy coping strategies vs. unhealthy coping strategies, positive self-talk, social support, healthy eating and exercise, and substance use and abuse.

Bridge to Success

Empowering Adults page

The Bridge to Success program follows the evidence-based curriculum Coping with Work and Family Stress. It is proven to effectively reduce stress and the risks of alcohol, tobacco, drug abuse, and violence. This comprehensive program is delivered over eight weekly sessions. It provides adults with the skills necessary to successfully handle challenging situations and to reduce stressors which can contribute to mental or physical health problems.

Chronic Disease Self Management

Chronic Disease Self Management Program (CDSMP) is an effective self-management education workshop for Veterans and older adults with chronic health problems which utilizes a variety of strategies for managing chronic conditions such as, healthy eating, exercise and physical activity, self-advocacy, becoming partners with your healthcare providers in managing the condition, medication management, managing emotions, and action planning. EmPoWER Somerset offers CDSMP, which covers a variety of chronic diseases, as well as more specialized chronic disease programs, including Diabetes Self-Management, Thriving and Surviving with Cancer, and Chronic Pain Management.

Financial Peace University

Financial Peace University (FPU) helps adults take control of their money through instructional videos, group discussions, and budgeting tools. Adults learn how to save an emergency fund, get out of debt, save for retirement and college, pay off a house, build wealth, and give generously.

Mental Health First Aid

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) for Adults teaches people how to recognize signs of mental health or substance use challenges in adults ages 18 and older, how to offer and provide initial help, and how to guide a person toward appropriate care if necessary. The course introduces common mental health challenges and teaches a 5-step action plan to help someone in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, psychosis, and addictions. EmPoWER Somerset also offers specialized modules of the program with a focus on Veterans and Higher Education. Youth MHFA is also offered which teaches adults how to recognize warning signs and assist a young person who is in need of help.

WISE

WISE Program

Empowering Adults page

The Wellness Initiative for Senior Education (WISE) program is a wellness and prevention program for older adults. It helps them to celebrate healthy aging and to make healthy lifestyle choices. The program uses interactive educational activities for topics including medication misuse and management, stress management, depression, and substance abuse. The program is six two-hour lessons once a week for six weeks.
